Devon Davis graduated from Mid-Columbia Adventist Christian School in Hood River, Ore., June 5. Not only did he receive his eighth-grade diploma from Peter Hardy, principal, but he was also recognized for a special achievement.
Months earlier, Bobbie DeWebber, his teacher, had encouraged her students to enter the Oregon's Lions peace poster contest featuring the theme, Peace Around The World.
Davis put a lot of thought into his poster. "First, I drew a peace sign, but it was kind of plain and boring. I have enjoyed studying other cultures and world history, so I imagined drawing a globe with a peace sign formed by flags of many nations. It took a couple of days to complete."
Davis won first place in the contest sponsored by the Lions International District G. Paul Zastrow, retired district governor, gave out rewards to Davis and other contestants last December.
Then this June, Elaine Johnson from the Hood River District Lion's Club attended Davis' graduation to present him with a red- white- and blue-ribbon medal. Davis, being modest, did not tell his parents this would be part of the evening's ceremony. With great pleasure, they clapped heartily with the rest of the guests.
