The Grants Pass Adventist School recently welcomed Shirley Allen, Oregon Conference children's ministries director as guest speaker for its fall week of prayer. Each morning, she participated in a short program with the kindergarten through second grade class. The entire student body would then come together each day for song service. She also shared a special message with grades three through eight.
Allen reminded students that “Jesus loves me” because “I am saved” and, for that, “I am joyful.” She also taught “I am brave,” “I am helpful,” and “I am free.” Working with Jesus, we each can accept His love. With Him, we can embody each of these qualities.
Each day, Allen shared a new message with students. She spoke about the special gifts God has given each of us. Students were encouraged to grow these gifts and help Him. They were urged to accept Jesus’ love and share it with others. Students loved listening to Allen's Bible stories and wonderful memories of South Africa, her homeland. At the end of the Week of Prayer, each child had an opportunity to make a commitment to Jesus. There was a call for baptism.
On the last day of this year, Allen will retire from her career of advocacy, ministry and support for children. Her work has spanned multiple decades on many continents. She has served as a teacher, principal and children’s ministries director, just to name a few. Her priority and passion, through every role, has been for children. As noted on the Oregon Conference website, she will never cease to be an advocate for children. Students at Grants Pass School were blessed and inspired. They enjoyed every moment of their time with Allen.
