What is the purpose of life? Philosophers and wise men have missed the real answer for ages. Christ instructed long ago, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you..." (Matthew 28:19-20). Our job is simple: go and tell others about Christ's love, help them and prepare them for heaven.
Lake City Jr. Academy has always done educational trips to places like Europe or Washington, D.C. So this year our ninth- and tenth-grade class wasn’t all that enthusiastic about taking a mission trip to LaVida Mission School in New Mexico.
But God showed me how selfish I had been. We spent a short few days at the mission, but managed to accomplish a lot. We dug holes for fence posts, tore out broken fences, razed a building and dug terraces, tree holes and numerous other things. Even through all this work, it was so rewarding.
The kids at this mission had so little and most were from broken families and yet they still had smiles on their faces. This made me take a good look at what I have and what I take for granted. I will always carry the knowledge of God's love, what He has done for those kids and all He will do for me if I let Him.
I went to New Mexico unsure of why I was there, but I came back sure of God's love and the reason He gave us the great commission. He didn’t just give us one more thing on our to-do list. He knew that by helping others, we would be blessed beyond words. It’s one of the greatest things I have ever felt!
