Excitement crackled through Crestview Christian School (CCS) in Moses Lake, Wash., the morning of April 8. It was Movin' On Up Day. For the school day, preschoolers became kindergarteners, kindergarteners got to go to first grade, and the sixth-graders got a preview of life in the upper-grade classroom. Regular CCS students were also joined by guests from other schools.
The students began their day with worship presented by Clinton Meharry, Moses Lake Church pastor. Music was led by Jim Morgan and several student guitarists. Tammi McIntyre's kindergarten class played games, read stories and made special artwork. In first through third grade, Melissia Wallen's students completed their Build & Fly Adventurer award by constructing paper and foam airplanes and kites; learning about the history of flight and creatures that fly; and taking their creations outside for test flights. Rene Penhallurick's fourth- through sixth-grade classroom enjoyed a fiesta — eating chips with salsa and guacamole and learning Spanish words, facts and music. Jeffrey Wallen led the seventh- through ninth-graders in the construction of an astrolabe — a precursor to the sextant that can be used to measure large objects such as buildings and trees.
Not only was Movin' On Up Day an opportunity for potential new students to experience CCS, it helped to calm some potential jitters for parents and kids. “Earlier this year my son wasn't sure about leaving the class he knew,” says Joanne Thomas, mom of a preschooler, “but he came back from Movin' On Up Day very excited about going to kindergarten next year with Teacher Tammi. I'm so glad he had the opportunity to attend.”
Movin' On Up Day gives Crestview's youngest students a chance to try a higher grade for a day and guests to visit and experience the school for themselves.
