When Oregon Conference members, Carol and Mike Altman, heard that the Clark Center in downtown Portland needed cooks, they jumped in to help. That was 17 years ago, and the Altman's volunteer team is still cooking up a storm every Monday evening. The Clark Center seeks to help transition men from life on the streets to appropriate housing, job training and other opportunities. “We’re the haystack experts,” says Carol, “but we don’t call it that. The men would have no idea what we’re talking about. To them, it’s just the best meal of the month.” And, like Jesus, the Altman's team is meeting these men right where they are.
