SHULL — Harold Eugene, 88; born May 27, 1926, Seattle, Wash.; died Nov. 23, 2014, Grants Pass, Ore. Surviving: sons, Thomas Eugene and John Ilnam; and 2 grandchildren.

Harold Eugene Shull went to his rest in Jesus on Nov. 23, 2014. The youngest of three boys, Harold was born on May 27, 1926. He grew up in the San Francisco, Calif., area and served in the Army during World War II. His Army service also included tours in the Phillippines and Korea. After college, Harold was an elementary school teacher in Oakland and Auburn, Calif.

Sonja Castberg became his wife in 1953. Together, they served (twice) as missionary teachers in Korea. Sons Daniel and Thomas were born while in Korea. Later, the Shulls adopted John from the Holt Orphanage. Oldest son Daniel went to his rest in January 2014.

Harold was actively involved in health education. He taught classes at Loma Linda University for over 10 years. He also assisted in public health on Native American reservations in Montana, Arizona and Washington. While living in Oregon, Harold taught stop smoking, weight control and stress management classes at the Grants Pass Adventist Church. He was church health committee chairman and led the Red Cross blood drive in Grants Pass until 2003.

Harold will be remembered as a kind-hearted follower of Jesus, as well as a wonderful teacher. He will someday soon claim the promise of 2 Tim. 7:8: “ Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things. Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel ... (NKJV)”

Harold Eugene Shull, 88, of Grants Pass died Nov. 23, 2014, at Royale Gardens Health and Rehabilitation Center. A memorial service is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. at Grants Pass Seventh-day Adventist Church, with pastors Marvin Clark and Christian Martin officiating. The youngest of three boys, he was born May 27, 1926, in Seattle to Claude and Adeline Shull. He grew up in San Francisco, where he attended school. In 1945, during World War II, he was inducted into the Army, and served in the Philippines and Korea. After graduating from college in 1950, he taught elementary school in Oakland, Calif., and Auburn, Calif. In 1953, he married Sonja Castberg and they sailed to Korea as missionary teachers for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. They had two sons, Daniel and Thomas, in Korea and later adopted a son, John, from the Holt Orphanage. He taught health education classes for more than 10 years at Loma Linda University Medical Center. Prior to teaching at Loma Linda, he worked in public health on the Crow and Cheyenne Indian reservations in Montana and Arizona for the Navajos and Hopis and later in Washington state with the Lummi, Upper Skagit, Snohomish and Nooksack reservations. He also worked for Walla Walla Hospital doing stop-smoking classes for nine churches in the area.

While living in Grants Pass, he was a longtime Sabbath school teacher at his church. He also conducted health education classes, including stop smoking, weight control and stress.He was chairman of the church health committee and the Red Cross blood drive until 2003. He helped with counseling at the annual fair booth and enjoyed visiting and preaching at many Seventh-day Adventist churches in Southern Oregon. In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Thomas Eugene and John Ilnam, and two grandchildren. A son, Daniel Emerson Shull, died in January 2014.
