Students in grades 5–10 at Mid-Columbia Adventist School (MCAS) had made a commitment before Christmas vacation to do something for someone other than themselves. They had thought of finding and sponsoring a needy child in another country. Then the tsunami disaster struck.
Unanimously, the students voted to give their funds to help the tsunami victims. Some students had already brought in their $9 pledges. One student brought an additional $40 of her own money.
Grades K–4 joined in on the project. Parents from one family donated $50 from their business. Later another family donated $80. Dale Milam, school principal, states, “I’ve even received donations from students who it appears have gone to their “piggy banks.” The school was able to write a check to ADRA for $297.27 for tsunami relief.
Then teachers and students received news that Andrew Bovee, son of former MCAS teacher Carol Bovee, had been diagnosed with Leukemia. Immediately, a second fund-raising program was begun, sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Five-year-old Andrew became our “honored patient.” A total of $172.13 was brought in over a two-week period. Students and teachers continue to pray for the Bovee family and the medical professionals who are treating Andrew.
