Donor’s Gift Makes New Computer Equipment Available An anonymous donor has made it possible for Portland Adventist Academy (PAA) to significantly upgrade its computer laboratory, replacing four-year-old computers with 22 advanced Dell computers each featuring a 3.0 GHz Pentium IV central processor and equipped with a CD-ROM burner and a 17-inch flat panel LCD monitor. Now students can save large projects from the school's computers to CD-ROMs or to “Flash Drives” for transferring information to their personal computers as well as transferring information such as homework done on their own computers back onto the computer lab’s equipment. Smith found one unanticipated but very tangible benefit of this new equipment: he does not have to shout to be heard as he did over the noise of the previous equipment. Both he and the students were surprised by how easy verbal communication is without former background noise. The new computer hardware will allow expansion of the curriculum, allowing image editing software for manipulating complex graphic and video images. The donation will also be adequate to purchase DVD burners at this year end, enabling the school to offer additional instruction in video editing. Two additional donors have provided funds to purchase a color duplex laser printer. This allows the students to print complex projects such as multi-page brochures. PAA is very appreciative of these computers and is indebted to the donors. We all echo what one student exclaimed when he first entered the lab after the installation of the new computers, “Wow, we’ve got a brand new lab.”
