Christ’s advice to “become as little children” took on new meaning April 10 for Port Angeles Church members and guests. On this weekend when many celebrate Easter, church elder and ventriloquist Daryl Trowbridge, with his good friend and favorite puppet Rusty, brought new life to this familiar story at the morning worship service and at an afternoon performance for the general public.
In the presentations, based loosely on Melody Carlson’s story “Benjamin’s Box,” Trowbridge recounted the story of Jesus’ last Passover, His death, resurrection and ascension as witnessed by a fictitious 12-year-old boy. "Rusty" interrupted frequently with thought-provoking questions, humorous antics and deep insights, much to the delight of the audience.
For four years Trowbridge and his growing family of seven puppets have ministered to Adventist and non-Adventist groups. His church family has been especially blessed with many heart-warming children’s stories and sermon-length programs. Some of Trowbridge’s other favorite puppets include “Gramps” the lovable senior, “Dum-Dum” the dim-witted dragon and “Oreo” the sweet skunk.
“It’s wonderful to be able to use my talents to serve God,” Trowbridge says. And to encourage others he offers, “Dedicate your talents to God. Ask Him how He can use you in His service. He’ll show you. And together, you’ll have a wonderful time.”
