Some students at Auburn Adventist Academy (AAA) will soon have the opportunity to not only be lifeguards but actually teach swimming lessons, which may allow them to contribute in a larger way to their school bill.
Swimming and lifeguard instructor Debbie Coon has recently received her instructor training certificate, allowing her to assist students 16 and older with the requirements necessary to achieve a water safety instructor certificate. This will give students the opportunity to teach lessons for younger children and therefore earn more money during the summer and possibly even during the school year.
With Buena Vista Elementary School just down the road, Coon saw the opportunities available for academy students interested in teaching lessons and decided to take an active role in helping make those opportunities a reality.
Coon teaches swimming, lifeguarding and first aid classes in Miller Aquatic Center, which houses AAA's 100,000-gallon, four-lane indoor swimming pool. She is developing a program for next spring that will feature academy students facilitating Red Cross swimming lessons.
Lifeguard Alyna Mitchell is a senior at AAA.
