Winter in Anchorage, Alaska—it‘s long, dark and often cold. But downtown comes alive every February during the annual Fur Rendezvous (Fur Rondy), a festival harkening back to the days when trappers, miners and traders brought their wares from the bush and partied with the income. Today shops, booths, exhibits, outdoor events and a carnival monopolize the blocked-off streets.
This year, on two Sabbath afternoons in February, more than half of Midtown Christian Fellowship's membership and several pre-members showed up to serve the community at Fur Rondy. They offered the warmth of propane heaters, free cookies and hot drinks to passers-by. Many were given a Bibleinfo.com disk and a church business card, and a Christian band, Sabyas, offered free concerts. Some people expressed a desire to attend Midtown’s worship services. “I think it went awesome!” exclaimed Daniel Macarone, band member.
At the close of the event, 15 remaining members and pre-members huddled for prayer, excited to have hopefully pointed a few to Jesus and a church where His truth for this time is preached.
