Gilbert "Gil" Plubell, long-time leader in Adventist education, died at his home in Boring, Ore., on Thanksgiving evening, Nov. 23, 2017, after a long illness. He had just turned 87. He is survived by Winnie, his wife of 66 years, and sons Bob and Dennis, along with seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Following more than two decades of educational experience as teacher, principal and superintendent in central California and Hawaii, Plubell moved to the Northwest in 1976 to become superintendent of schools for the Oregon Conference. Five years later, in 1981, he was elected as education director for the North Pacific Union Conference, where he served for eight years. In 1989 he became the North American Division education director, where he served until his retirement in 1996. Retirement back to the Northwest did nothing to diminish Plubell’s passion for Adventist education. For an additional 15 years, he continued to serve the Oregon Conference on a part-time or stipend basis as special assistant to the superintendent.
Dennis Plubell, who currently serves North Pacific Union Conference as vice president for education, says: “Dad gave us more to be thankful for than we could ever list — a legacy of love and Christian leadership that demonstrated integrity, practicality, and people first!”
Other comments have poured in. “In Gil’s presence there were no strangers.” “He was the respected leader who spoke genuinely, with candor and diplomacy, to encourage and empower many.” “Gil mastered the balance of gentleness and strength, optimism and realism, good humor and effective action to benefit kids.” “He will always be remembered for the personal touch, unwavering presence and support, and steady faith and confidence in God’s grace.”
Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9, 2:30 p.m. at the Hoodview Seventh-day Adventist Church, 26775 SE Kelso Rd., in Boring, Ore.
