WWU Offers College Credit Class for Homeschool Students

By Caeden Rogers, October 09, 2026

Homeschool juniors and seniors can explore the life and ministry of Jesus while earning four college credits through a new online religion course from Walla Walla University.

RELB 104, The Ministry of Jesus, examines Christ’s life within the historical and cultural setting of the New Testament Gospels. Students will consider the meaning of his life, ministry, and identity, along with their relevance for Christian life today. Through lectures, class discussions, video clips, readings, and other activities, students will gain a fuller understanding of Jesus as the Christ sent from God and the Savior of the world.

The course is designed specifically for homeschool students and offers the interaction of a live, structured class in a limited-size setting. Rather than completing prerecorded lessons or receiving AI-generated instruction and feedback, students will learn directly from Paul Dybdahl, professor of mission and New Testament. The format will allow Dybdahl to become acquainted with individual students, respond to their questions, and guide conversations as the class explores the biblical text together.

That personal interaction is an important part of the course. Students will not simply work through information independently; they will have opportunities to listen to different perspectives, articulate their own ideas, and participate in thoughtful conversations about faith. These discussions can help students examine familiar stories with greater depth while considering how the life and teachings of Jesus continue to shape Christian belief and action.

In addition to studying an important subject, participants can experience the expectations and rhythms of a college course before graduating from high school. Completing readings, contributing to discussions, and interacting with a university professor can help students build confidence as they prepare for future education. The course also provides an opportunity to strengthen communication, time-management, and critical-thinking skills while earning college credit.

Because the class is limited in size, students can learn in a setting that combines the flexibility of online education with the connection and accountability of a live classroom. For homeschool students who may be curious about college but not yet ready to enroll full time, the course offers an accessible introduction to university-level study.

Tuition is approximately $394, with a $50 enrollment fee and an estimated textbook cost of $25 to $40. Registration opens Nov. 1, and students must register by Jan. 1. The class begins Jan. 4.

To enroll, students should submit the University Options for High School Students application and select option one, “College Provided Faculty (WWU online classes only),” under Class Registration Information. Enrollment is completed after payment is received.
