Campbell Story Comes to Film

Many of Adventists fondly recognize the name Sam Campbell, and the older you may be, the more familiar it is. He played a significant role in the upbringing of many, but awareness of his contributions to our world is fading.

A team of filmmakers, including a graduate of Andrews University, is determined to change that by creating a film that encourages a new generation to step away from their phones and reconnect with what truly matters — our Creator and His creation.

The Sam Campbell documentary film, titled Voice of the Wilderness, promises to deliver an immersive experience that brings the life and legacy of Sam Campbell, an influential but often forgotten naturalist, back into the limelight. The documentary aims to capture the essence of Campbell's work and beliefs as he offered solace to a war-torn America, encouraging people to reconnect with nature during some of the nation's darkest times.

The film delves into Campbell's work from the 1940s through the 1960s, exploring his storytelling, filmmaking and efforts to preserve the wilderness. It’s not just a portrait of Campbell himself, but a tribute to the forests, lakes and wildlife of the Northwoods of Wisconsin and Boundary Waters Wilderness, which shaped his work. Campbell’s heartfelt connection with nature, highlighted through his whimsical yet poignant anecdotes, underscores his ability to blend scientific observation with a deep appreciation for the beauty of the natural world.

The archival 16 mm footage will allow viewers to see the world through Sam Campbell’s eyes, providing a unique window into his life on his island in Three Lakes, Wisconsin, and his interactions with animals like Loony Coon and Inky the porcupine. This footage will bridge the gap between past and present, offering a nostalgic yet educational experience.

Campbell’s philosophy of turning to nature as a source of healing is presented as an enduring message for today’s generation. The film seeks to inspire a reconnection with nature as a remedy to the current societal ills of addiction and depression, echoing Campbell's belief in nature as a source of peace, wisdom and spiritual fulfillment.

With a commitment to making Campbell’s work relevant today, the film not only highlights his historical contributions but frames them as a powerful answer to modern dilemmas. In essence, Voice of the Wilderness promises to be an engaging documentary that blends the past with the present, advocating for a return to nature as a means of rediscovering purpose in today’s distracted world.
