Positive Life Radio’s (PLR) Christmas in July food drive on July 25 collected more than 10,000 pounds of food and personal care items. Eight communities in the PLR listening area will benefit.
During the day, Christmas music aired from noon to 6 p.m. Positive Life Radio staff called in live reports and stories from each location.
In Spokane, PLR morning announcer, Don Godman, said, “A lady stopped by and said she couldn’t give food right then, but she wrote out a check for $200 to help with the food drive.”
In Yakima, the organization receiving the food had to find a second vehicle to haul away the donations. “They couldn’t believe how much was contributed,” said Walter Cox, the PLR staff member onsite. “We filled up one vehicle; they got another, and we filled it up too!”
Walla Walla Community College had a food drive of its own leading up to the Christmas in July broadcast. Staff, faculty and students donated more than 500 pounds to the Christmas in July grand total.
“It was incredible to see this big truck drive up to us all loaded with bags of food!” said Breanna Mayne, PLR announcer.
In Wenatchee, two departments at the juvenile detention center competed to see who could bring in the most food. Together, the detention and parole departments brought in more than 270 pounds of food.
The annual Christmas in July food drive increases awareness that families struggle with food needs all year, not just during the holiday season. Although the food drive is over, it is never too late to make a donation. Contact a food bank in your area.
