A simple request for a Living Nativity by the young adults of the La Grande Church soon turned into a full-scale production involving more than 80 volunteers from the La Grande, Cove and Elgin churches.
Led by Pastor Tim and Lori Gray, members began sewing costumes, painting signs and props, and baking items. Radio interviews and newspaper articles told people about the event.
The school parking lot was soon transformed into the township of Bethlehem. Numerous scenes depicted the life of Jesus—the census taker, temple, marketplace, and the manger. Roman guards greeted guests as they made their way to Bethlehem for the required census. Visitors mingled with wisemen, shepherds and storekeepers, as each told their story of the Savior. Live animals added to the authenticity of the town.
After the self-guided tour of Bethlehem, guests could enjoy hot drinks and refreshments in the church fellowship hall. Despite cold weather and a windstorm, more than 500 community residents entered Bethlehem that weekend. The event was well-received, and several members from the community even asked how they could help with next year’s event.
