The Sandy (Ore.) Church honored military veterans and emergency first responders on Sabbath, Nov. 10, 2018. This is the church’s ninth year hosting this event to express appreciation for the valuable service these men and women have given to their country and community.
The event began with the Pleasant Valley Church Pathfinders color guard leading a procession of military and public service members to the front of the church sanctuary. Nick Jones, Sandy Church pastor, welcomed and thanked the service members. Participants included military veterans from the church and community, a Clackamas County sheriff’s deputy, a Sandy police officer, and firefighters from the Sandy Fire District.
Sandy church members John and Sharon Peil organized the event. John served in the U.S. Army as a tank platoon leader and went to Vietnam as an intelligence officer. He invited each of the service members to introduce themselves and share where they served. Afterward, service members and church members enjoyed a vegetarian luncheon in the church fellowship hall prepared under the direction of Nonie Caudell.
During the luncheon, U.S. Marine veteran Richard Botkin presented some of his research on the Vietnam War. Botkin is author of the book Ride the Thunder: A Vietnam War Story of Honor and Triumph. Local businesses also donated gifts, which were delivered to many service members in a drawing held by the Peils.
